Description
Howling arctic wolve pups.Inspiring and exercising their new senses. The arctic wolf (Canis lupus arctos), also called snow wolf or white wolf. Arctic Wolves often use caves as dens. The mother will give birth to two or three pups in late May to early June. The Arctic wolf is a subspecies of the gray wolf (Canis lupus). Arctic wolves inhabit some of the most inhospitable terrain in the world. Arctic wolves mainly inhabit Northern Canada and Alaska, parts of Greenland and Iceland and Northern Europe. Arctic wolves are usually smaller than gray wolves, and also have smaller ears, slightly shorter muzzles, and shorter legs to reduce exposure to the frigid air. They live alone or in packs of about 6 wolves and are usually all white with a very thick, insulating coat. Arctic wolves tend to be white with brown irises, unlike most other subspecies of wolves with yellow to amber eyes. White fur gives them camouflage in a snowy environment, and the darker irises give added protection to the eyes in a high glare environment. The Arctic wolf is able to withstand sub-zero temperatures and up to 5 months of absolute darkness a year.
