Description
This Family trio of Bobcats, Mom and her two youngsters running down a snowy hillside in the winter. Bobcat litters of range in size from 1 to 6 kittens, weighing 10-12 ounces at birth. The Kittens are weaned at 12 weeks of age and independent of their mother at 10-12 months. They are tawny to gray with indistinct black spotting. They have a cheek ruff and a short stubby tail. Only the mother takes care of them. As they grow, she will bring live animals (like mice) back to the den, so the kittens can practice hunting. When the kittens are two to three months old, they do not need milk anymore and can eat adult food. Bobcats are carnivorous and eat meat. They have sharp retractable claws and keep them inside their toes, so when they leave a footprint, the claws do not show. The bobcats hind legs are longer than its front legs, which gives it a bobbing way of walking. However a small "bobbed" tail, from which it gets its name.they have shorter black-tufted ears than a Lynx. The Bobcat is solitary and nocturnal animal that is most active in the darkness of night, tending to hunt most during dawn and dusk. The bobcat (Lynx Rufus) is a species of feline. Although adapted to a variety of habitats across the country, they do not tolerate the deep snows for very long . Bobcats are very elusive. They are reported in the northern portion of the park. Yellowstone has many rock outcrops, canyons bordered by rock ledges, conifer forests, and semi-open areas that seem to offer conditions favorable for bobcats.
