Description
The state of Montana landscape is considered prime mountain lion habitat. These felines are highly adaptable to survive in much of the mountain ranges and forested pine regions in the western side of the state. Mountain lion habitat is mostly mountainous and foothills, but any habitat with sufficient food, hiding places and space to avoid people. A large cat body, powerful limbs, smaller head, short faced, smaller roundish ears, long neck and long round dark tipped tail.
Mountain lions are most active at dusk and dawn when their prey is active, but they do travel at any time of the day or night. Lions have special adaptation for seeing at night. In return they are easily blinded when caught in a flashlight beam or a passing auto headlight. Mountain lions are incredible predators, silently stalking their prey in the cover of dusk or darkness. They are carnivores, which can range from deer to elk and porcupines. Find the Mule deer and you will see the mountain lion, also known as puma, panther, cougar, puma concolor wildcat and others. This striking image of mine was taken in the Bridger mountain range while cougar was is chase mode after its food.
