Description
Old iconic Moulton barn outside of Jackson hole, Wy. The beautiful Teton mountain range popping out over its shoulder. Thomas Alma Moulton came over Teton Pass into Jackson Hole in 1912. Alma, as the Moultons know him, filed a homestead claim on a piece of land near the small settlement of Kelly in 1907 and began working the land a year later. Four years passed before he moved his young family there full time.
He began work on the barn a year later, The lodgepole pine cut from nearby Timber Island and notching the logs to build its frame. He placed grain bags on the barns square roof to keep out the weather. It was simple, but served the purpose of sheltering the family's livestock.
In time, the barn grew. Alma and Clark added a hayloft and pitched roof in 1928. A lean-to was added to the south side in 1934 to accommodate horses on the mail run between Jackson and Moran. A lean-to on the north side followed in 1939 to provide extra space for the family's livestock.
The residents called the community Grovont , a pronunciation not to be confused with the nearby mountains and river, which took the French name Gros Ventre. Today the area is known as Mormon Row, named for the large number of Mormons who lived there.
But the community of Grovont was short-lived. Efforts to establish a national park in Jackson Hole began soon after the Moultons and other homesteaders laid claim to the land. Decades of controversy followed, as ranchers fought to keep their land out of the park.
Their resistance was slowly broken. John D. Rockefeller purchased much of the land in the valley with the intention of donating it to the federal government for the establishment of a park.
The only person on the row not to sell was Clark Moulton, one of Almas four sons. His father had given Clark and his wife, Veda, an acre. They built a home there that remains in the family to this day.
