Old iconic Moulton barn outside of Jackson hole, Wy. The beautiful Teton mountain range popping out over its shoulder. Thomas Alma Moulton came over Teton Pass into Jackson Hole in 1912. Alma, as the Moultons know him, filed a homestead claim on a piece of land near the small settlement of Kelly in 1907 and began working the land a year later. Four years passed before he moved his young family there full time.
He began work on the barn a year later, The lodgepole pine cut from nearby Timber Island and notching the logs to build its frame.He placed grain bags on the barns square roof to keep out the weather. It was simple, but served the purpose of sheltering the family's livestock.
In time, the barn grew. Alma and Clark added a hayloft and pitched roof in 1928. A lean-to was added to the south side in 1934 to accommodate horses on the mail run between Jackson and Moran. A lean-to on the north side followed in 1939 to provide extra space for the family's livestock.
