Description
My photograph this spring of misty Lower Yellowstone Falls on the first day the roads open on April 20 in 2018. At the nearest weather station was 54 inches of snow on the ground and a temperature of 51 degrees at 7870 feet of elevation. Truly on rare scene because of all the record snowfall this winter. Knowing the fall is 308 feet tall, the snow drifts at the bottom are estimated to be nearing 100 feet up. With temperature on the rise you can see massive snow cracks on both sides preparing to collapses in to the base of the falls. The Lower Falls (of the Yellowstone River) was by far the most popular waterfall in Yellowstone National Park. Sitting at the head of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River, Most of the yellows in the canyon result from iron and sulfur in the rock. Namesake yellows that earned the national park its name. The canyons colors were created by hot water acting on volcanic rock. It was not these colors, but the rivers yellow banks at its distant confluence with the Missouri River, that occasioned the Minnetaree Indian name which French trappers translated as roche jaune, yellow stone. A map from 1869 gives the falls its current name of Lower Falls for the first time and estimates the height at 350 feet. Lower Yellowstone Falls is the largest volume waterfall in the Rocky Mountains of the United States. These falls are 308 feet high. The volume of water flowing over Lower Yellowstone Falls varies, The Yellowstone River is only 70 feet at the point at which it goes over the lower falls. During peak season about 63,000 gallons per second will flow over Lower Falls. This huge canyon is roughly 20 miles long, more than 1,000 feet deep, and 1,500 to 4,000 feet wide. The Yellowstone River begins on the slopes of Yount Peak in the Absaroka Range of Wyoming. It then flows through Yellowstone National Park, streaming in and out of Yellowstone Lake. This is an image stitched together with about 35 different frames is why almost everywhere you look you will see high details. Original image is about 40" x 56" tall, but downsized for FAA limits. Great for any large scale requirements, contact me for more info.****************Thanks to the following group administrators for featuring my waterfalls image called Lower Yellowstone Falls **************** Your Very Best Photography, Images That Excite You, Big Sky of Art,PICTURES OF NATURE AND MORE, Nature Landmarks Landscapes Wildlife, Forests and Woodlands,Art for Landscape Photography, Travel Art, Photography Beauty of the USA !
