Description
This Yellowstone bison calf resting its head on its mothers back. The 2019 Yellowstone bison population is estimated to be around 4,500. Yellowstone National Park buffalo herds optimal size population is under 4,000. Bison is a Greek word meaning ox- like animal, these are remarkable animals, how they make it through harsh winters is amazing. Giving birth to one calf in late April or May. Calves of the year are born after 9 to 9-½ months of gestation. A bison calf can stand within a few hours after being born. Newborn baby bison calves weigh any where from 30-70 pounds at birth. After a few months, their orange hair starts to change color to dark brown and their characteristic shoulder hump and horns begin to grow. A calf at one week old will run circles around their mothers for short burst of energy, then quickly take a nap while mom is resting. The Yellowstone National Park bison herd is considered to be genetically pure herd managed by the Department of Interior. It has long been postulated that Yellowstone bison are important because they remain the only continuously free roaming herd. The Yellowstone Park bison herd is divided into two sub-herds that are mostly isolated from each other. This includes two primary breeding herds: northern range 3,337 bison and central herd is about 1,190. Buffalo feed primarily on grasses, sedges, and other grass-like plants, they tend to roam in open prairies and grasslands.

Sweetness! I’ve also read your accompanying description to this wonderful wildlife capture — so interesting! I really hope this species continues to survive for a long, long time …… predictions for all wildlife has been so dire lately; & these animals have enough hardships … they deserve it. Thank you for preserving them here ;)🍃
