Artist's Description
My photograph this spring of misty Lower Yellowstone Falls on the first day the roads open on April 20 in 2018. At the nearest weather station was 54 inches of snow on the ground and a temperature of 51 degrees at 7870 feet of elevation. Truly on rare scene because of all the record snowfall this winter. Knowing the fall is 308 feet tall, the snow drifts at the bottom are estimated to be nearing 100 feet up. With temperature on the rise you can see massive snow cracks on both sides preparing to collapses in to the base of the falls. The Lower Falls (of the Yellowstone River) was by far the most popular waterfall in Yellowstone National Park. Sitting at the head of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River, Most of the yellows in the canyon result from iron and sulfur in the rock. Namesake yellows that earned the national park its name.
