Description
A large attentive grizzly bear is preparing for some action with some watchful grey wolves. Both species are predators are compete for food sources. Males bears are the first to exit the winter dens. They often live in the same habitats and confront each other.Wolves will prey on ungulates all year round on the other hand bears feed on ungulates primarily as winter killed carcasses and ungulate calves in spring, and weakened or injured male ungulates during the fall rut.
If a grizzly wants a wolf kill, the wolves will try to challenge defend it, but they usually fail to chase the bear away. The grizzlies are more powerful and with fierce claws, but the wolves are quicker and out number a bear.
Around wolf kills, it's another story. In most of these cases, grizzlies is almost always claim the kill.
Interactions between bears and wolves in YNP further support the theory that bears and wolves can coexist without adversely affecting each other.Some bouts last a long time and some total avoid conflict, just depends on who is more hungry.
