Description
" Black Wolf " A lone black wolf listening and staring off a cliffs edge while the snow is piling up. Wolves fur is very dense and thick.Which is why it stays frozen on its body. Black wolves are actually a type of gray wolf -- the name of the species is a misnomer, as gray wolves are sometimes born black because of a genetic mutation. Of all the wolves color variations, the black individuals are the most intriguing. Black wolves are colored due to a genetic mutation at the K locus gene. This mutation causes a condition known as melanism, an increased presence of dark pigmentation which causes an individual to be blackish. They can be all colors and range in size depending on where they happen to live. Wolves range in color from all shades of gray, tan and brown to pure white and solid black. Most wolves of the arctic region are a creamy white color. About 30% of Canadian wolves are black. The black wolf is common only in the Rockies. Wolf pups are born with blue eyes, which will change to yellow-gold by the time the pups are 8-16 weeks old. Wolves are highly intelligent animals. Studies indicate that the domestic dog's brain is 15% to 30% smaller than the wolves. Current 2016 number of wolves is now at its highest level since the predators were introduced back into Yellowstone in 1995 from Canada.
