Description
These Montana Bighorn sheep are above the tree line in a wilderness habitat. A Rocky Mountain bighorn ram's horns can weigh 30 pounds and this ones curl is large. The rams are identified by their large spiral horns which grow throughout their lives. Female ewe also have horns, but they are of smaller size. Female bighorn or "ewes" have slender, straighter horns that grow throughout their lives to lengths of 8-10" for Rocky Mountain bighorn.
Their wide-set eyes are situated well forward on the head, providing a wide arc of exceptional vision. Specialized hooves and rough soles provide a natural grip as make precarious jumps and climbs up and down sharp cliff faces. A soft inner pad provides a grip that rivals the best climbing shoe in its ability to handle slight changes in the surface of a cliff. Modified toenails of the bighorn outer hooves are shaped to snag any slight protrusion on a rocky surface.
When the males choose to fight each other, which is usually done to dictate dominance or mating rights, the two rams will simply face each other, back up onto their hind legs and run towards at each other and ram their heads together.
