Description
Grizzly bear fishing action during a sockeye salmon run up a river bed. Bears try to consume high grade fat at this time. Salmon are a high calorie meal for a bear.Grizzly bears will often eat parts of the fish with the most calories first in case they aren’t able to finish eating the whole fish. Some bears are fish thieves, so quickly eating the most nutritious parts is wise.A sockeye salmon contains about 4500 calories. As sockeye salmon return upriver to their spawning grounds, their bodies turn brilliant red and their heads take on a greenish color, hence their other common name, red"salmon. Breeding-age males develop a humped back and hooked jaws filled with tiny, visible teeth. During the spawning runs, sockeyes—especially males—undergo dramatic physiological changes, including an increase in body depth and the development of a hooked lower jaw. The body turns brilliant red, while the head turns green.. The body turns brilliant red, while the head turns green. Spawning itself usually occurs in rivers, streams, and upwelling areas along lake beaches. During this time 2,000 – 5,000 eggs are deposited in one or more “redds”, which the female digs with her tail over several days time. Males and females both die within a few weeks after spawning. When salmon is very abundant the skilled grizzly bears who catch lots of salmon will start only eating the fattiest parts of the fish – the brains, eyes, and skin. They then drop the discarded salmon into the water where it is swept downstream to be eaten by smaller or less experienced bears, gulls, foxes, eagles and other scavenging animals.

Robert, revisiting this stunning capture. I wonder if the fish knew what was in store for them. The fish, the bear and then the mountains - wow, what more can you ask for in a shot. f/l
