Artist's Description
This evening bull elk on a ridge just before dark. A mature bulls antlers or sometimes called rack may have 6 to 8 points or tines on each side and can weigh more than 30 pounds. Elk shed their antlers in late winter and regrow them in the spring every year. If you look closely at elk antlers, you see grooves and ridges in it. These marks are the paths of veins that carried blood throughout the growing antlers. The blood stops flowing to the antlers in August, the antlers finish hardening, and the velvet falls off or is rubbed off. By September the hardened antlers are composed of calcium, phosphorous ready for the fall rut. Elk can rotate each eye independently and have extreme wide-angle vision, able to see to both sides and straight ahead simultaneously. Coming into winter, elk grow a thicker coat of hair consisting of longer and guard hairs covering dense, woolly under fur to insulate them from the cold temperatures of winter. A bull elk will grow its neck mane a lot thicker.
