Description
All you needed to know about pine cones and more. Male pine cones are much smaller then female pine cones which are the ones that are big and spiky, while males are very small and closed in. The male pine cones grow on the lower part of the tree, while the female ones grow on the upper part. Pine cones that you find on the ground are female pine cones that have completed their reproductive process. The female cones produce seeds, while the male cones drop pollen. The scales open temporarily to receive gametophytes, then close during fertilization and maturation, and then re-open again at maturity to allow the seed to escape. Maturation takes 6 to 8 months from pollination in most Pinaceae genera. Pine seeds from the cones are loved by such wildlife creatures as birds and squirrels which then spread seed leftovers throughout. This is how a new pine tree appears.Humans also eat parts of the pine cones the Pine Nuts!
